RUSSELL TOWNSHIP, Ohio–The Russell Township Park District has finally created the long-sought Modroo Farm Preserve, but disagreements continue over how to use this historic farmland and other open space.
Some residents object that the $1.55 million deal allows some sports on the farm, believed to date to the early 19th century. Meanwhile, petitioners wanting more passive use of parks have proposed creating a rival park board, which could oversee different land than the park district’s. The township trustees have chosen members for this board, but it can’t operate until voters approve it. A ballot measure is expected next November.
