Conservation Conversation: Linda Butler, Photographer

Lake Erie: On the Edge   —   May 16, 2019

Protect Geauga Parks will host Linda Butler presenting a slide show of photographs from her exhibition, Lake Erie: On the Edge. The event is scheduled for Thursday evening, May 16, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at The West Woods Nature Center.

Ms. Butler is a well-known and highly regarded fine art photographer from northeast Ohio. The direction that Butler is now taking with her camera follows her growing concern with environmental issues. Between 2014 and 2017 she circumnavigated Lake Erie by automobile several times, and flew in small planes to take aerial color photographs. During the fall of 2018, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History hosted a 50-print exhibition of Lake Erie: On the Edge. Through the photographs, she hopes to inspire people to protect this “gem of a lake” at our doorstep.

“In my current photographs of Lake Erie, an undercurrent of concern permeates the images of coal-burning power plants, refineries and immense industrial complexes that encircle the lake. Yet on a crisp spring day, ducks shake off the cold water, and green leaves emerge from branches of trees. After a long winter, joy is palpable. In these images, fact and emotion knit themselves together in a complex mosaic that examines the web of our lives on one of the world’s great lakes.”
